IBM Watson virtual client experience center
A large portion of the work I’ve led has been in the IBM Watson Client Experience Centers. The CECs are located throughout the world, and give potential clients a way to to experience Watson solutions in an immersive environment. These centers are communal environments, with a central seating area surrounded by a 360º screen and directional sound.
The CEC was a tremendous lead-gen tool for IBM Watson, but with Covid, our client experience centers were closed for the foreseeable future. We used this as an opportunity to change the way we create and deliver these high-touch experiences.
The original CEC experiences were docent-led, high-level explainers about Watson solutions intended to foster conversation about the technology using captivating visuals. In order to stay true to that mission, we engaged AKQA to help us build an extraordinary new visual style for these Watson environments, and an engaging high-level narrative about our solutions.
Creative development
Where the core Watson aesthetic is dark and scientific, the look for Watson Health is much more human and approachable. We made a conscious effort to eschew any 3D work early on, bus as we dove into a new tier of content for the CEC, it became clear we needed to expand our visual language.
The look we developed happened over the course of 2½ months. Through trial and error we developed a lighting style and set of materials which have a more illustrated feel. The materials are basic, tactile, and largely non-refractive. The result is something that feels like core Watson, including the essential element of illumination, yet more appropriate to the health space overall.
The projects that follow comprise an ever-growing portfolio of virtual CEC experiences spanning many Watson products.
